The John Allwright Fellowship (JAF) is a prestigious and competitive scholarship program designed for scientists and economists from ACIAR partner countries who are actively engaged in collaborative research projects supported by ACIAR. This fellowship provides an incredible opportunity to gain postgraduate qualifications at an Australian tertiary institution. The goal of the program is to enhance scientific research capacity and foster stronger institutional connections between Australia and ACIAR partner countries, empowering researchers to produce high-quality, impactful research.
About the Fellowship
As the largest investment in the ACIAR Capacity Development Program, the JAF offers Master’s by Research or PhD scholarships to agricultural researchers, managed through the Australia Awards system. ACIAR goes beyond just funding, providing additional pastoral care and opportunities for skills development to ensure participants are equipped for success in their careers. Currently, there are 39 JAF scholars enrolled across 15 Australian universities.
ACIAR’s Gender Equity Policy and Strategy, which has been a core commitment since 2017, has ensured that women now comprise at least half of all new JAF scholars.
Addressing Climate Change
The Indo-Pacific region is highly vulnerable to climate change, and agricultural systems are at the frontline of this global challenge. As global food demand rises, sustainable solutions are necessary to safeguard agricultural practices and market systems. Recognizing this urgency, the JAF program has dedicated places in the 2026 intake for research focused on climate change, adaptation, and building resilience. Applicants are encouraged to explore how their research can contribute to mitigating climate impacts in their home countries.
Award Conditions
Successful applicants will need to adhere to specific conditions, including leaving Australia for at least two years following the completion of their scholarship. Scholars who fail to meet this requirement will incur a debt for the total cost of the scholarship.
Fellowship Benefits
The JAF provides the opportunity to undertake postgraduate study in Australia, receive financial support, and gain exposure to a global network of researchers and institutions. Scholars will benefit from additional mentorship and development opportunities, designed to enhance their professional and research capabilities.
