The DAAD In-Country/In-Region Programme for Sub-Saharan Africa is now open for applications! This prestigious scholarship initiative aims to strengthen higher education systems in the region by supporting Master’s and PhD students in development-related fields. Programme Objective

The programme is designed to foster internationally oriented higher education systems in Sub-Saharan Africa. It provides financial support for students who plan to pursue teaching and research careers at universities or contribute to the public sector with their academic expertise. Scholarships are awarded for Master’s and doctoral studies in various development-focused disciplines.

Who Can Apply?

This scholarship is open to:

  • Graduates and postgraduates from Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Candidates applying for a Master’s programme (with a first academic degree)
  • Candidates applying for a PhD (with a Master’s degree)
  • Students who wish to study in their home country (In-Country scholarships) or in another Sub-Saharan African country (In-Region scholarships)
  • Female applicants and candidates from underprivileged regions or groups are strongly encouraged to apply

Note: In-Country scholarships for South African students are managed separately in collaboration with DAAD and NRF.

What Does the Scholarship Cover?

The DAAD In-Country/In-Region Scholarship provides financial support, including:

  • Monthly stipend
  • Study and research allowance
  • Thesis publication costs
  • Tuition fees

For In-Region scholarship holders, additional benefits include:

  • Travel allowance
  • Health insurance

Study Duration

  • Master’s: Up to 2 years
  • PhD: Up to 3 years
